Meeting The Challenges Of Yoga Meditation

There is much to challenge us in our yoga meditation. It can be more difficult than we might expect, although it doesn’t have to be. How hard you push yourself can be a function of both your instructor and your own expectations of what you think you’re capable of doing. A recent short article at the Guardian illustrates just this point.

handstands, asked to defy my body’s limit to stretch and given a pose that felt suspiciously like a push-up. All this in a 75-minute yoga class with instructor Jacqueline Quesnel at Akasha Studio, Long Circular Road, Maraval. My yoga education prior to the class was decidedly limited, I’d only tried the activity once before, in a yoga for beginners class, which didn’t prepare me for the intensity of Jacqueline’s workout. What I did know was that yoga was the type of exercise that focused not just on the body, but on the mind as well. Jacqueline practices an Anusara-based yoga, a type of yoga she said was known for hand stands and promised we would make an attempt before the class was over.

While our daily yoga meditation practice makes demands of our bodies physically, our minds and spirits are also challenged to grow and to progress. Practicing with an experienced instructor who can help us to develop in all three areas is an important aspect. Always remember to do yoga in the most appropriate environment. This would include using the best yoga mat you can find in an environment with the proper amount of space, right temperature, and a peaceful meditative setting.
